Wire glows red-hot as heat produced increases proportional to square of current (I²).
Why is an Electric Fuse Used?

A fuse contains a wire with a specific low melting point. If excessive current flows due to short-circuiting or overloading, the fuse wire quickly melts and breaks the circuit, preventing fires and protecting costly electrical appliances!

Energy Saving Note: Electric bulbs waste electrical energy as unwanted heat. Modern LED bulbs produce almost no heat and save tremendous electricity!

Historical Breakthrough
Hans Christian Oersted (1820)

Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted was the first person to notice that whenever an electric current passes through a wire, the needle of a nearby magnetic compass deflects immediately!

This proved for the first time in history that electric current produces a magnetic field around it.

What is an Electromagnet?
An insulated copper wire wound tightly around a piece of soft iron acts like a powerful magnet as long as electric current passes through it. The moment current is turned off, the coil completely loses its magnetism!

The push button switch is open. No current flows through the electromagnet coils. The soft iron armature rests gently against the contact screw.

The 5-Step Ringing Cycle:
  1. Switch Closed: Current flows through the electromagnet coil.
  2. Magnetic Pull: Electromagnet attracts the soft iron armature.
  3. Gong Strike: Hammer strikes gong producing sound!
  4. Circuit Breaks: Armature moves away from contact screw, interrupting current.
  5. Spring Return: Coil demagnetizes, spring returns armature to contact screw, repeating!
Why does it stop ringing? When you release the push button switch, current permanently stops and the cycle halts immediately!

Heating Effect of Current

When electric current flows through a high-resistance wire (like Nichrome), electrical energy is transformed into heat energy.

Appliances: Electric room heater, iron, geyser, toaster.
Magnetic Effect of Current

Electric current flowing through a wire creates a magnetic field around it. Discovered by Hans Christian Oersted in 1820.

Applications: Electromagnets, electric bells, scrap cranes, electric motors.
Safety Fuse vs. MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)

A fuse contains a thin wire with a low melting point that breaks the circuit by melting when safe current limits are exceeded. A modern MCB is an automatic electromagnetic switch that trips and turns off; it can simply be flipped back on without replacing wire!
